Apply For Pell Grant

Students that would like to apply for the Pell Grant must complete and submit the FAFSA application.  The FAFSA application is the only application necessary to be eligible for a Pell Grant.  Students eligible for the Pell Grant must be considered low-income.  The FAFSA takes into consideration a studentís income (if they are considered an independent student) or the studentís family income (if you are considered a dependent student).  All income, family assets, and other financial information will be required to report within the FAFSA application.  This is to determine if you are eligible for financial assistance to pay for school.

Most of the financial information requested in the FAFSA can be found within your current year tax forms.  Please make sure you only use your current year and not prior year tax files.  If you havenít completed your current year taxes then you can leave the financial area within the FAFSA blank.  When you have this information available you can go back online and fill-in the missing sections.  Please keep in mind that your financial aid package will not be processed until a completed FAFSA is submitted.  Many financial aid offices will give you an estimated financial aid award amount, but the final fin aid package is based on a completed FAFSA.
The FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, can be completed either online or through paper form.  Completing the FAFSA online is the most efficient way to submit your application.  Students have the opportunity to re-start their application from where they last stopped if they didnít previously complete.  Students can also receive tips and recommendations from the Department of Education while completing their application.  When the student has completed their application they can immediately submit their application online and receive confirmation that it has been received.

When you application has been reviewed, you will receive either an email or letter from your schoolís financial aid office indicating your award amount.  Many schools will indicate if you qualify for a Pell Grant within this award letter.  A schoolís cost of attendance also is a factor in your Pell Grant eligibility, so you may receive a Pell Grant at one school, while not qualifying at another due to the cost of attendance.
The FAFSA application is the only form needed to be eligible for the Pell Grant.  The Pell Grant is not a loan and does not have to be repaid.  Students may be eligible to receive up to $5,550 if they qualify for the maximum Pell Grant amount.  Students that attend a post-secondary institution, pursing their first undergraduate degree, and are considered low-income (based on the information given within the FAFSA) may be eligible for a Pell Grant.
